Malaysia's FIFA ranking is now 158th in the world and has remained stagnant. Even the Philippines is higher ranked than us (147th) and that is a basketball playing nation. Below is my list of why Malaysian football is at the shit end of the world.
- Low class mentality. General mentality of "Bro, we are Malaysians lah. We can only go so far"
- Racism and favoritism. The main reason why my friend left Malaysia and is consulting in Indonesia. There is a huge brain drain from Malaysia and we still cant accpet the fact it exist in our country.
- Ministry of Education and FAM can't seem to gel. The were instances where FAM had to back off from development intiatives from the schools because of the Education Ministry's claim that the school students are their responsibility and they should develop them as football players.
- Wrong or inappropriate teachers as football coaches in schools. What happenned to 1 student 1 sport. Supports my point 3.
- Fans are too influenced by BPL. Many stopped watching the local league due to over coverage on English league. Luckly Astro 801 decided to televise MSL.
- Politicians in FAM. Why are they there in first place? I think the government should answer this question. Shouldn't the running of football be left to ex players and football professionals?
- Royalty in football. Who is going to have the guts to stand up and have a productive debate with the Tuanku and Tengku Mahkota? By the way, contrary to popular belief, my friend fondly said that Tuanku in most cases listen to advise and makes a decision after that. i personally met Tengku many years ago. He is real a gentleman.
- State FCs are run amateurishly. Except for Kelantan of course. My trip to Cardiff City made it clear to me how far behind we are in the way we manage and run a club.
- Football development has no clarity or outreach. Why cant the malaysian public input be included in the development of the blueprint. The objective of Malaysian football should come from the public. Ie where do we want to be in 5 years and 10 years time.
- Corruption and bookies. Make gambling legal.
- Not enough money to fund development. Allow for alcohol sponsorship. Doesn’t have to be on TV. I know we are a Muslim nation however we are also a democratic country. It is the individual's right to drink or not to drink alcohol. Maybe all promotions and advertisement should be Below The Line. Ie no radio, print or TV ads or selling of alcohol during matches but we should allow for on ground activation campaigns like what did during the Hockey World Cup in Malaysia in 2002. Heineken had a major outlet outside the Bukit Jalil hockey stadium.
- No leadership in driving the nation to become world beaters. I don’t see anyone in the current FAM management who believe that we can develop a whole system to produce world cup qualifying team. Anyone who has any inspiration of that nature is immediately banned for 4 years. Tan Sri Anuar Musa is case in hand.
- Malaysia Boleh! Biggest failure to becoming excellent in anything. Boleh everything but master of none.
- Hand out mentality. Expecting our government to do things for us.
- Not a lucrative career for most aspiring players. We are still moving too slowly to make it an attractive option to be involved in football as a career. Just remember that only players at the very top get highly paid salaries. How many players in the league get paid RM20000 a month. What about the salaries of coaches etc.
- Not much is done to engage and foster "fandom" to support the local club or even the national team. How much fan appreciation is done to keep fans loyal?
- FAM is too many things to many people. FAM's role should be to enforce policies for football development. A separate private entity should be responsible for running the league in a professional and a profitable way.
This are only The OrangeMan thoughts on our football. You may add to it.
support u thru and thru...
ReplyDeleteMalaysian have live themselves in a culture in which i called 'social condition' environment that prevent creative culture and sense of identity. As long as this culture remain exist, we will never reach our true potential. Coaches or professionals in football development in Malaysia should immediately throw away their so called 'winning mentality' and shift to condition free culture that will ultimately create new identity and new sense of purpose in playing football.
